The Modern Indian Studies initiative was established to bring together a wide range of research initiatives focused on present-day India, while providing students and the Carolina community the opportunity to develop a broader, deeper understanding of contemporary India. Our goal is to offer programming, events, courses and resources, to raise awareness and an understanding of modern India.

MIS Graduate Student Award Recipient Sugandh Gupta
Sugandh Gupta, currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, received one of two MIS Graduate Student Conference Travel Awards in Fall 2023.
MIS Graduate Student Award Recipient Saumitra Sinha
Saumitra Sinha, who graduated with his PhD from the Department of City and Regional Planning in May 2024, received one of two MIS Graduate Student Conference Travel Awards in Fall 2023.
MIS Affiliate Highlight: Dr. Shilpa Darivemula
Dr. Shilpa Darivemula is a General Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Fellow in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UNC. She is also pursuing a Master’s in Clinical Research at the Gillings School of Global Public Health.
