CURS Spring Speaker Series with Dr. Beth Noveck “Tackling Urban Challenges with Collective & Artificial Intelligence”

February 22, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join the UNC Center for Urban and Regional Studies (CURS) and the Modern Indian Studies (MIS) Initiative for a webinar with Dr. Beth Voveck titled “Tackling Urban Challenges with Collective & Artificial Intelligence” on February 22nd from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Register here!

This conversation will focus on how cities and other governments are taking advantage of new technologies, including the technologies of collective intelligence that enable us to work together as groups online, as well as data processing technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning, to solve problems. At the same time, these tools create challenges for our institutions and their leaders, who are not trained in these more agile, open and collaborative ways of working. We will discuss how cities around the world from Helsinki to Hermosillo are experimenting with new technologies and new models of governance to tackle complex urban challenges from climate change to COVID.

Beth Simone Noveck is a professor at Northeastern University, where she directs the Burnes Center for Social Change and its partner project, The Governance Lab and its MacArthur Research Network on Opening Governance. The author of Solving Public Problems: How to Fix Our Government and Change Our World (Yale Press 2021), she is also Core Faculty at the Institute for Experiential AI (IEAI) at Northeastern. New Jersey governor Phil Murphy appointed her as the state’s first Chief Innovation Officer. She is also Visiting Senior Faculty Fellow at the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University and a Fellow at NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge. Between 2018-2021, she served on Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Digital Council.

Previously, Beth served in the White House as the first United States Deputy Chief Technology Officer and director of the White House Open Government Initiative under President Obama. UK Prime Minister David Cameron appointed her senior advisor for Open Government.
