UNC Summer Courses on South Asian Culture

May 20, 2021 - July 29, 2021

Consider taking one of these amazing Summer Session courses at UNC. They are remote, mostly asynchronous, and cover a bunch of General Education requirements. Even if you’re doing an internship or working over the summer, you can still explore South and Southeast Asia!

Summer Session 1 (May 20 to June 21)

ASIA 164 = MUSC 164: Music of South Asia. 3 Credits.

This hybrid course will meet online via Zoom on Thursdays 6:00-8:35 pm; the rest of the instruction will be asynchronous. REMOTE ONLY-MOSTLY ASYNCHRONOUS.

Instructor: John Caldwell

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the music of South Asia, focusing on India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The entire spectrum of musical genres will be covered.

Summer Session 2 (June 28 to July 29)

ASIA 228. Contested Souls (Virtual Study Abroad): Literature, the Arts, and Religious Identity in Modern India. 3 Credits.

This hybrid course will meet online via Zoom on Mondays 3:15-5:50; the rest of the instruction will be asynchronous. REMOTE ONLY-MOSTLY ASYNCHRONOUS.

Instructor: Afroz Taj

An analysis of how historical interactions between Hinduism and Islam have inspired the creation of philosophies and great works of literature and art that continue to inform Indian society today.
