Unsettling Utopia: The Making and Unmaking of French India with Jessica Namakkal

February 17, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

As part of the Carolina Seminar “Towards a liberatory ‘global’?: Building anti-racist, feminist, and decolonial understandings of the global”

Friday, February 17th, 1:00pm, FedEx Global Education Center 1005

Unsettling Utopia presents a new account of the history of twentieth-century French India to show how colonial projects persisted beyond formal decolonization. Through the experience of the French territories, Jessica Namakkal recasts the relationships among colonization, settlement, postcolonial sovereignty, utopianism, and liberation, considering questions of borders, exile, violence, and citizenship from the margins.

Jessica Namakkal is Associate Professor of the Practice in International Comparative Studies, History, and Gender, Feminist, and Sexuality Studies at Duke University. She is the author of Unsettling Utopia: The Making and Unmaking of French India (Columbia University Press, 2021), a member of the Radical History Review editorial collective,  and one of the co-editors on the website the Abusable Past.
