Samarjit Chakraborty
William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor
Computer Science Department
India Related Research
Dr. Samarjit Chakraborty’s research is concerned with designing
computers that are embedded inside other systems, such as cars,
airplanes, and medical devices. He took up his current position at UNC
Chapel Hill after working for many years as a professor of Electrical
Engineering at the Technical University of Munich in Germany, where he
held the Chair of Real-Time Computer Systems.
At TU Munich, he helped initiate, and lead, multiple Indo-German
research projects with Indian institutions like IIT Delhi, IIT
Kharagpur, and the All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
Delhi. These projects were concerned with using new engineering and
computer science techniques to improve transportation and healthcare,
taking into account the unique characteristics and challenges that exist
in India. Work in these projects also involved accommodating various
socio-economic issues in India, to design engineering solutions that
have better chances of adoption.
He established a joint TU Munich/IIT Kharagpur Indo-German Center for
Intelligent Transportation Systems, to leverage German expertise in
automotive and transportation for designing India-specific solutions
that address Indian road conditions, traffic patterns, and its rich
public transportation infrastructure. This center received funding from
multiple German and Indian agencies.
Dr. Chakraborty has a PhD from ETH Zurich. He is a Fellow of the IEEE,
and received several prized and awards for his research, including a
2023 Humboldt Professorship Award from Germany. In addition to funding
from governmental funding agencies, his work has regularly been funded
by industry leaders such as General Motors, Google, Intel, Siemens, BMW
and Audi.
