Maitreyee Singh Wins Inaugural MIS Undergraduate Paper Award

The Modern Indian Studies (MIS) Initiative at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is thrilled to announce Maitreyee Singh as the inaugural winner of the Modern Indian Studies Undergraduate Student Excellence Award!

Maitreyee Singh, Junior AS Bachelor of Arts -Global Studies/Data Science Minor, won the award for her outstanding paper “Communal Threats & Community Resilience: The Postcolonial Promise of Panchayat Raj Institutions.” Reviewers were impressed with Ms. Singh’s integration of theory, history, and concrete observations about governmental bodies in contemporary India. A further profile of Ms. Singh and her award winning paper will come at a later date.

Aashna Singh’s paper, “Geography, Difference, Violence & the Fracturing of Sikh and Punjabi Identity” was given an honorable mention as runner-up for the award.
