Modern Indian Studies Initiative Launches Website

UNC Global is pleased to announce the launch of the new website for the Modern Indian Studies (MIS) initiative at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The website, MIS.unc.edu, is an important next step for the initiative, which aims to bring together a wide range of research focused on present-day India, providing students and the Carolina community the chance to develop a broader, deeper understanding of contemporary India.
As a leading global public research university and home to the Carolina Asia Center, the first Title VI funded pan-Asia national resource center in the southeastern U.S., Carolina is well positioned to be at the forefront of advancing knowledge of modern India across North Carolina, the United States and beyond.
“We look forward to expanding the reach of the Modern Indian Studies initiative, and the website has been developed as a great hub with many resources to achieve that,” said Anusha Chari, director of the Modern Indian Studies initiative and professor of economics and finance with joint appointments in the UNC College of Arts & Sciences and the Kenan-Flagler Business School. “We are excited to continue transforming the study of contemporary India.”
Asia is a key area of focus in UNC-Chapel Hill’s current strategic plan, Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good, which emphasizes deepening Carolina connections with the world for shared learning, problem solving and discovery.
“The launch of the Modern Indian Studies website is an opportunity to publicly highlight the work Carolina researchers are already doing, and it provides a platform for others to seek and build connections,” observed Barbara Stephenson, vice provost of global affairs and chief global officer at UNC-Chapel Hill. “Modern Indian Studies is a key contributor to the success of the institutional strategy for Asia described in Carolina Next. I am thrilled with the quality of academic work done during the first year of MIS – and pleased also with how well the new website captures that work.”
On this new website, visitors will see events from the Modern Indian Studies initiative as well as news from across campus related to research and programs focused on modern India. The website also features a database of Carolina researchers who are conducting or are beginning to conduct research related to India.
