Ambassador Sandhu visit to UNC-Chapel Hill

On April 21, Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu visited UNC-Chapel Hill’s campus to meet with students, faculty, and staff about India and US relations.

Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu assumed charge as Ambassador of India to the United States on February 3, 2020, and presented his credentials to the President of the U.S. on 6 February 2020. He is one of the most experienced Indian diplomats on U.S. affairs, having twice served in the Indian Mission in Washington, DC, as Deputy Chief of Mission (2013-2017) and First Secretary (Political) responsible for liaison with U.S. Congress (1997-2000). He has also been at the Permanent Mission of India to United Nations (2005-2009). Prior to his current assignment, Sandhu was High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka (2017-2020) and served at the High Commission of India to Colombo as the head of the Political Wing (2000-2004). Sandhu was Consul General of India in Frankfurt (2011-2013) and has worked in the Ministry of External Affairs as Joint Secretary for United Nations (2009-2011), Joint Secretary (Administration) heading the Human Resource Division, and Officer on Special Duty (Press Relations), Ministry of External Affairs (1995-1997), liaison with foreign media in India. In a distinguished career in the Indian Foreign Service since 1988, Sandhu started in the former Soviet Union (Russia) where he worked as Third Secretary (Political) / Second Secretary (Commercial) in the Indian Mission (1990-1992). Following the breakup of Soviet Union, he was sent to open a new Embassy in Ukraine and served as Head of Political and Administration Wings (1992-1994). He studied at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, and graduated with honors in history from St. Stephens’ College, Delhi. He earned a master’s degree in international relations at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
